Self IP as Listener vs. Different IP

Hello all,

I am trying to determine whether to use a non-floating Self-IP as a Listener, or using a different IP all together for a new deployment of BIG-IP DNS. According to the F5 SOL, it sounds like both are supported:

A BIG-IP pair in which both units are licensed for BIG-IP GTM or BIG-IP Link Controller and both units answer DNS in an active-active configuration

On each unit you can configure a listener to use the the non-floating self IP address or other local IP address on which the system listens for connections. This configuration allows either unit to respond to DNS requests.

What I am looking for is if one solution is recommended over another. What are the pros/cons to each? Are there scalability benefits to one over the other?

  • I would suggest to use Self IP adddress as Listener and thats the one recomended as well.

  • We have quite a few BigIP GTM/DNS deployed and all of them use the non-floating Self-IP as a Listener.
