May 10, 2007Redirecting handheld/mobile devices?
Hello all,
I did some searching of the forums here, and Goggled without success as well. I've been asked by our web group to see if I can have our f5s redirect mobile devices, e.g. all requests come in as http://domain.com, but mobile devices get redirected to http://domain.com/m.
It appears to me that there is a somewhat large and constantly shifting landscape of possible user-agent strings in the mobile world, making that a less than ideal item to write an iRule around. My boss had the idea of just reversing the check and looking for desktop browsers and robots and sending those to the main page, while all other traffic would go to the mobile page. That thought kind of scares me, but perhaps it's just a knowledge limitation on my part.
Are any of you doing automatic redirection for mobile clients like this, and if so, how? Are there much better/smarter methods we should look at instead? I've found the WURFL project on sourceforge, and something called "The Switcher" written by a guy in Europe. I just don't know what is likely to be the best/most maintainable method of handling this.
Thanks for any info,
Mark
