Persistence on XMPP traffic?

We are trying to choose a persistence method that works the best for our XMPP (5222) application deployment. Since this is non-http traffic are we limited to certain choices? Thx!

Not that I'm an expert on XMPP, but I thought it DID use HTTP as a transport... Or is that just an option?
