Feb 16, 2010Monitoring current traffic per VIP
Hi All,
Is there a way to monitor the traffic/bandwidth utilization per VIP.
I'm using BIG -IP LTM 6900 version 10.0.1. From the GUI, I can access virtual server statistics but they don't show the current bits and packets but only give you a total count. They do however show you the current connection count but I'm more interested in knowing the bandwidth utilization of the VIP.
Screen shot attached.
Thanks.
Andy

You can use a solution like Cacti to poll the individual vip statistics. There is a template (Click here ) in the wiki for this.

There's some other cacti templates in a thread somewhere that will do stats on profiles (SSL, Compression, Rate Shaping) as well. - hc_andy_35682

Thanks all.
Following this wiki entry to get cacti graphing the F5, I am stuck on step 4.
http://devcentral.f5.com/wiki/default.aspx/AdvDesignConfig/CactiF5HostTemplate.html
4) In the Cacti GUI, select Import Templates from the navigation menu on the left, then select the file named cacti_host_template_f5_big-ip.xml from the archive (extract wherever your browser has access) then click open, and finally, click save.
I've tried to upload the template, but get this error.
Error: XML: Hash version does not exist.
Any ideas???
Thanks.

It appears the template is newer than my version of Cacti - hence producing that error.
Will look to upgrade my version of Cacti. - JRahm

That's one way to solve, but not required. Check your cacti version number here: http://docs.cacti.net/howto:determine_cacti_template_version
Once you have that, you can modify the hash in the template with a little vi trickery: :%s/\(hash_..\)\(YYYY\)/\1XXXX/g
where YYYY is the template version, and XXXX is your version. - hc_andy_35682

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the suggestion of updating the hash - it worked.
I can import the template now, but am not seeing any snmp walk succeed for the statistics below.
Associated Data Queries
Data Query Name Debugging Re-Index Method Status
1) F5 BIG-IP - Interface Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [0 Items, 0 Rows] Reload Data Query Delete Data Query Association
2) F5 BIG-IP - Pool Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [0 Items, 0 Rows] Reload Data Query Delete Data Query Association
3) F5 BIG-IP - VS Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [0 Items, 0 Rows] Reload Data Query Delete Data Query Association
4) F5 GTM - Pool Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [0 Items, 0 Rows] Reload Data Query Delete Data Query Association
5) F5 GTM - WideIP Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [0 Items, 0 Rows] Reload Data Query Delete Data Query Association
When I run a debug for say the F5 BIG-IP - VS Statistics , I get this:
+ Running data query [10].
+ Found type = '3' [snmp query].
+ Found data query XML file at '/usr/share/cacti/site/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_vs.xml'
+ XML file parsed ok.
+ Executing SNMP walk for list of indexes @ '.1.3.6.1.4.1.3375.2.2.10.2.3.1.1'
+ No SNMP data returned
+ Found data query XML file at '/usr/share/cacti/site/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_vs.xml'
+ Found data query XML file at '/usr/share/cacti/site/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_vs.xml'
+ Found data query XML file at '/usr/share/cacti/site/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_vs.xml'
What am I doing wrong? I've followed the wiki entry to a tee.
Thanks.

My bad...it's working now. I had to allow the Cacti Server to access the LTM.
This is done via System > SNMP > Add host (Cacti Server) and update. - JRahm

Sweet. Glad it's working for you. Let me know if there is anything you'd like to graph that's not in the template, such as WAM/GTM/LTM stats that are available in snmp. - hc_andy_35682

For those with long Virtual Server names or interface names greater than 15 chars, you can get the graphs to display the full name by following this FAQ entry.
http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/faq.htmlAEN2454
Then you have to apply the changes by going to Graph Management, ticks all your graphs and select Reapply Suggested Names from the drop down menu. (This was not included with the FAQ so I sat here scratching my head why it didn't update the title on the graphs).
For example I have three VS called:
INSIDE_VLAN_TO_ANY_TCP
INSIDE_VLAN_TO_ANY_UDP
INSIDE_VLAN_TO_ANY_ICMP
The VS name displayed on the graphs gets truncated to just the first 15 characters (ie: INSIDE_VLAN_TO_), so I would have to click on each one to find out whether I'm looking at the graph about TCP,UDP or ICMP.
HTH some people.

Is that global settings only, or is that something I can control in the template? I haven't dug in yet...
