LTM Clock Sync Issue

Hi,

We have a pair of LTMs [ L1+L2] configured in HA mode. Both boxes are setup to sync with ntp time servers. But L1 is synchronizing with ntp servers but L2 not.

Both boxes can ping time servers.

On L2 box when i give ntpq -p, i see INIT msg and all zero's. Very strange

Thanks -genseek

  • Hi,

What interface are using for NTP Sync process? Are there any ACL/Firewall rules in the path? Try to restart the NTP daemon in the BIG-IP with this:

    bigstart restart ntpd

  • Hi,

Sometimes BIG-IP can reach NTP servers via MGMT interface, but also can reach via TMM interfaces.

I had this issue long time ago and this is what I did: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/7000/000/sol7017.html

How far off is L2's local clock vs. the NTP time? I've had to manually bump the local clock to a time closer to NTP's reported time to get my initial update to occur.

  • Hi,

You can try to start the TMM interfaces and see if you can achieve synchronization with NTP servers.

So until here for troubleshooting purpose:

    1. Configure/Check the System --> Platform with the IP/netmask/Gateway of Mgmt Interface.
    2. Configure/Check the Timezone (System --> Platform).
    3. Set via console/ssh the clock with date command.
    4. Configure DNS Servers.
    5. Configure multiple Public NTP Servers.
    6. Configure VLAN/SELF-IP/Route in the TMM interfaces.
    7. Restart your BIG-IP.
    8. Wait for Sync and check with ntpq -np
  • Hi,

Try to follow the steps above. Before that, put to work the TMM interfaces, check the date in the BIG-IP and reboot.
