ICMP from Cisco switch to VIP

Hello All

Im having some performance issues on the BIGIP when testing. It seems very slow and takes a long time to do basic connectivity tests.

I have VIPs set up with Pools and Nodes setup as normal. If i ping a node address from my Cisco switch at 5000 packets, it replies as it should flying through the 5000 packets. If i ping the VIP address that the node relates to, i get a very nice pattern of 1 drop then 50 pings, then 1 drop and 50 pings.

Im not saying this is my issue for the slow testing but does anyone know why this is happening. The VIPs live on the External VLAN and the Nodes are on the INTERNAL VLAN. All switchports and F5 ports show no errors and are nailed at 100mb Full Duplex.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Marshyrob,

Have you tried http://ask.f5.com ? We're really not in a position to answer generic configuration questions unless it's something we happen to have run into in our own work. I've got a Cisco switch in my test network (sounds like pretty much what you're doing), and haven't noticed a problem, but haven't run this specific test either.

I hope ask F5 can help!

    Don.
  • I've seen some ghostly issues with the F5 and nailing the interfaces to 100M/Full Duplex. Try setting to auto/auto on both sides and see if you get the same performance
  • How fast does it send those 5000 packets? There is icmp rate limiting on the BIG-IP that is set to 250 icmp requests/sec by default so, we'd drop requests that are more than that. Other than that, I'm not sure, I just sent 1000 sequential pings to a BIG-IP LTM virtual server and received them all.
