Pretty poor isn't it. This very issue informed point 3 in this API related blog I wrote: http://packetpushers.net/attributes-great-network-device-api/.

A call to 

get_statistics
seems to be your only option but involves you having to compare those to the same, prior to cache clearance. Not ideal.

That, or you simply trust that if you didn't get an error, it worked.
