How does f5 listens to user traffic trying to access a URL ( www.example.com) explanation on a lower level)
Hi ,
I am pretty new to F5 and here i am trying to configure F5 LTM in an HA (active standby) mode. I would like to know what happens after the url(www.example.com) resolves to the virtual ip(10.100.xx.xx), what is the traffic flow on a lower level , will the traffic be configured to hit the selfip1(active device) or will it hit the floating ip , what will happen if the primary unit is down and the standby becomes active how the traffic will be routed to the secondary device ?
is it necessary that the selfip should be in the same ip range as that of the virtual ip in an HA config ? ( confused if it is necessary )
please help

Traffic to the vips should be routed to the floating self-IP (shared IP in HA config). Only the active unit responds to the floating IP. Vips and self-ips can be on different networks it all depends on what the purpose of the vip might be.
See these articles for additional virtual server and traffic processing info:
