I may be wrong but loopback interface is essentially up all the time, right ?

Should be, unless someone changes that. That is why you'd want to monitor it's availability or more importantly, you want to monitor if actual service (http, smtp rtc) is running on the loopback interface.

You would monitor the members using the non-loopback address. In the example document that would be 10.1.1.11.

Hi,
You can use a monitor with following parameters:
- transparent : enabled (will send monitor to mac address of pool member)
- address alias : loopback address (IP packet destination is loopback)
