Failover port on 2000 boxes

Hi Everyone,

Recently I came across the new series of F5 boxes with Failover port separately given and also the Serial port has been changed into a RJ-45 can someone indicate a document that details how these failover ports and serial ports are configured on the new boxes.

Regards,

    Hi,

This is the platform guide for the 2000 series: http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/pg-2000s2200s/1.html?sr=36350845

The serial port exists for you to connect a console to the unit and be able to configure it. The failover port works if you connect a cable between the 2 units. The units see if there's electrical signal on the wire. As long as there is signal, one will be active, the other standby. Once loss of signal is detected, the Standby assumes that the Active is dead and it will attempt to set itself active.

If you configure a BIG-IP high-availability pair to use network failover, and the hardwired failover cable also connects the two units, hardwired failover always has precedence; if network failover traffic is compromised, the two units do not fail over because the hardwired failover cable still connects them.

    This SOL details more:

    Hope this helps!

  • Thanks Night, I need to know about this new RJ-45 Ethernet Failover port on the new box is it just that the previously used Serial port is converted into Ethernet port and its simply sense the electrical signal between the two units or we may define the IP address on these Ethernet port.

  • When my coworker cabled up our new 2000's, we learned that using a standard network cable with T-568B pinout does not work for failover. What is the pinout for the failover cable?

  • I think the 568A is the one to use, standard cat5E/cat6 crossover cable.
