F5 DNS and F5 LTM

Hello,

We have one F5 DNS and 2 x F5 LTM

Here is the architecture:

4 sites. On each sites 8 servers providing http access to an application

On each LTM there are 2 virtual pools each with the 8 http servers Testing ping and a specific error code.

At the F5 DNS level a round robin mechanism is configured to load balance the traffic between the 4 sites.

Everything is working fine when all the sites are online using the F5 DNS VIP.

However when doing failure testing:

  1. i.e: Stoping the 8 http servers on a site

--> The trafic is randomly sent to the virtual pool containing the offline http servers which display an error as the servers are offline.

Is there a way to ensure the trafic is not redirected when the member of a virtual pool in a LTP are offline?

Is it because we are using round robin?

Thanks for your help.

  • If a VIP is indeed down, F5 DNS should not redirect traffic to this VIP irrespective of F5 DNS LB. Have a look at LTM & F5 DNS logs and try to correlate events.
