EXTREMELY slow response in Admin GUI on nodes

Today we observed, first time ever, that when clicking on Virtual Servers and Nodes in the local traffic section takes forever and a day to load.

The system refreshes the page immediately, shows Loading... and sits there for about four minutes before drawing the lists. Our lists are not overly complex - 15 VS and 30 Nodes so I can't imagine it's that. Again, it started today and no major changes were made.

The only work done today was our software release people took nodes out of rotation while they upgraded the code and then put them back in rotation after. A typo may have been introduced - but where and how would it create this effect?

Please help - F5 had no clues to offer.
  • Self replying here as we determine the root cause. If your preferences are set to attempt to resolve hostnames and there is an issue with the DNS server config (server down, outdated, etc) then the loading of these pages becomes slow. In my case one of the DNS boxes had a problem and was the primary on the LTM which caused this problem.

Wanted to post back in case someone else has this problem in the future. Cheers.
  • Just as a quick side note: This comes up frequently in many different contexts - DNS issues / timeouts are a fairly common reason for slowdowns in various configurations. In general, if you find that things get crushingly slow, check DNS early for a potential easy fix...

Great catch and thanks for posting this.

  • I had the same thing happened about many moons ago...not with just F5's but other systems that were configured to work with DNS. So it was decided that we should any device that aggregates connections or load balancing more then 1 application should resolve to itself. This way the impact is more contained in the future.

    My 2 cents,
