DNS Delegation Question
I am taking my GTM 302 exam soon and just had a very general question of DNS delegation. I have a question on iterative DNS look ups and delegation.
I have my own public DNS server and I add domains to it all the time. If I add a .co.uk domain name to my DNS server I set up the SOA and NS server records.
I understand the theory of iterative DNS lookups. With my DNS server when I add a domain how does uk 'parent' DNS server know to return my Name Servers. I dont add any info to the uk DNS server, I only add it to my DNS server.
With iterative DNS look ups, it must go to the root server, then the uk server and this will then return my NS servers for the domain I added. How does the uk server know what are my NS for my new domain name I have added to my DNS server. I dont add any records to the uk server for my new domain on the DNS server.
I bet it is going to be a simple answer and I missed something :-)

I don't know how co.uk works exactly, but for every other domain out there, when you purchase the domain, you specify the DNS servers that serve that domain. These records then get populated to the root server responsible for that TLD automatically for you.

Hi,
Actually you report your new public domain to the UK servers, via a name domain request to an associated of RIPE (ex. www.britishnic.com).
These organizations are responsible for the allocation and registration of domain names.
