Default Persistence Profile SharePoint 2010: Cookies vs. Source Address affinity

The F5 deployment guide for SP2010 references using cookies as the persistence profile, however i have received instruction from F5 support engineers that Source Address affinity is the way to go. Any thoughts?

  • Cookie is likely the better option in general. Source address affinity could cause unexpected load balancing behavior if you have a large number of clients behind a proxy where they are all being seen by the BIG-IP as one source IP address. Subsequently they would all be balanced to the same pool member. Using cookie persistence would enable those users to be balanced equally based on individual cookies per user.
