Cacti or SolarWinds Orion

Hi. I would like to know if Cacti will provide more information about our BigIPs over Solarwinds Orion. Today we monitor the BigIPs with Orion but we don't get any useful stats besides CPU Utilization. What we really need is interface utilization, http/https responses/requests and a few others. We do monitor the switch interfaces that the BigIPs are connected to but that doesn't help all that much.

So I was just wondering what some of you think.

Thanks
  • I am not familiar with Solarwinds Orion, but I can tell you that I am currently graphing the following with Cacti:

VIP I/O traffic, connections, connection rate

    TMM CPU/Memory Utilization

    Global HTTP request/response information.

Here's a thread with a screencap of the http traffic:

And here's an article that details how to configure Cacti for graphing the F5 LTM:

  • Those graphs look really nice and have some useful info. Is there anyway to see what IP Addresses are hitting the BigIP interfaces?
  • I'd use a web analytics tool to comb the web server logs for this. You might be able to use a statistics profile for this, but I think it would require a sorted array to get your top X IP hits into the stats profile. Even at that, I'm not sure if the stats profile fields are available in the mibs. Anyone?

Other option is to log client IP addresses with an iRule, there are plenty of examples on the forum for this.

You can indeed monitor F5 devices nicely through Solarwinds Orion. You do it through the universal device poller
  • Can you provide more info on how you are managing vs etc from orion?

    Thanks
  • I'd like to use Orion UDP also, but, I can't seem to find the right OID to monitor. If I go into the Performance section on an LTM, I see they are using RRDTOOL which we use also, but, I can't for the life of me figure out what OID's are being monitored?

Paul, the version 10 administration guide calls out, very specifically the OIDs used to generate the dashboard graphs that are not avaialbe.
