I would not recommend this approach. If you are not familiar with installling multiple packages, perhaps the virtual appliance route would be easier. If you download the vmware player, you can download a Cacti virtual appliance, which already has the necessary packages.

citizen_elah / Dev,
Guys Please just be patience with me until i get cacti up running. Now i am going to take the VMWARE router with Cacti Virtual Appliance on wiindows 2003 server and see how it works. Cacti Virtual Appliance is packaged with MYSQL and PHP!. Do i need to also install the tools below mentioned in the original article published citizen_elah ?
Apache or IIS?
Perl (version 5.8.7)
NET-SNMP (version 5.2.3)
RRDTOOL (1.2.15)
Also i want to create maps to visualize the traffic flow through your F5 device using the Plugin Architecture & the Weathermap plugin.
Thanks.

Hi Francisco
If you want an 'out of the box' solution for running cacti you might want to look at the vmware cacti appliance from Jumpbox http://www.jumpbox.com/app/cacti. Its the only one i have found so far that i can import the templates on to as it runs the latest version of Cacti. I got this working yesterday and it is doing a good job so far. In order to get weathermap installed you will need to register it which is $20-30 but seems worth it to me.
I also wanted to say a big thankyou to citizen_elah and everyone else who has contributed to helping us monitor F5 with cacti. Your efforts are much appreciated.
Thanks

The cacti VA will already have the tools necessary to run cacti, including the ones you listed. You will need to install the plugin architecture and the weathermap plugin independently.
Simon, thanks! I've learned so much from the fine folks here at F5 that I wouldn't feel right not contributing what I discover along my journey. - Micko_108330

G'day,
If you want to muck around with cacti, but don't have the time to do the install.
Try going to cacti users group, they have an ISO , that self installs every thing needed to run Cacti.
Works great and is constantly updated. Google "CactiEZ"

Click Management->Devices->
Scroll down to the bottom, and click verbose query on either the interface or WideIP statistics. If this does not return something like this:
+ Found data query XML file at '/snmp_queries/f5_gtm_wip.xml'
+ XML file parsed ok.
, I'd verify the data queries (xml files) have been copied to the appropriate locations at the cli:
/resource/snmp_queries/f5_gtm_wip.xml
/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_ifStat.xml
/resource/snmp_queries/f5_bigip_vs.xml
Also verify that cacti is able to communicate via snmp to your LTM/GTM. - francisco_1_162

i get the following below
+ Running data query [12].
+ Found type = '3' [snmp query].
+ Could not find data query XML file at '/var/www/html/resource/snmp_queries/f5_gtm_wip.xml'
+ Error parsing XML file into an array.
+ Could not find data query XML file at '/var/www/html/resource/snmp_queries/f5_gtm_wip.xml'

In the data query F5 GTM - WideIP Statistics, the XML path should be:
/resource/snmp_queries/f5_gtm_wip.xml
So, if is /usr/local/share/cacti, then you would copy the f5_gtm_wip.xml file from the template archive you downloaded to directory /usr/local/share/cacti/resource/snmp_queries/
You'll also need to make sure that the user that cacti is running as has permissions to the directory and file.
