For many legacy back end applications, you must use a tcp half open type monitor. These applications often expect their clients to open a single connection and keep it open for long periods of time (essentially forever). A full connection causes these apps to eventually fill up their connection table. Application performance gets slower and slower and eventually the service needs to be restarted.
