Welcome to our Featured F5 Series. Our spotlight for May is on Jeff_Granieri, a F5 who is an exceptional contributor to DevCentral!
DevCentral: To begin, please introduce yourself and tell our community a little about yourself. What you do and why is it important?
Jeff: Hi Everyone! My name is Jeff and I’ve been with F5 as a Solutions Engineer for almost 6 years now, with over 25 years of experience in the Financial Services field providing network security design and trading system implementations.
I survived the challenges of low-latency network design — and thrived in the fun times of low-latency trading network/security architecture. Those microsecond decisions on Wall Street taught me that reliability isn’t optional; it’s the difference between a smooth market open and absolute chaos and I have seen my share of chaos!
That’s exactly why this work matters so much. When you’re architecting the networks that power global trading platforms, you’re not just moving packets. You’re protecting the financial backbone of the world. A single breach, a single latency spike, or a single failed failover during market hours can wipe out millions in seconds, trigger regulatory nightmares, and kick off days of post-mortem meetings. What I do at F5 — and what I’ve done for decades is help ensure that the systems running the world’s money never blink.
DevCentral: As a Sr Solutions Engineer at F5, what is your typical workday like?
Jeff: Coffee first — always. Then I tackle whatever’s on fire that morning: customer troubleshooting, design sessions, or building solutions for new requirements. Every day is different. Some days I get to jump into our internal labs to test new designs or run through training. Other days you’ll find me building custom presentations and demos for customer requirements or collaborating with our product teams on roadmap items. And yes, you can usually find me browsing a fresh DevCentral thread to see if I can lend a hand.
DevCentral: Can you give us a glimpse into your technical expertise?
Jeff: Your trading applications not behaving? Give me a call. I can help leverage my full BIG-IP stack expertise — LTM for intelligent load balancing, AFM for next-gen firewalling, and of course some custom iRules to make the application traffic behave exactly how the developers wanted (even when they handed it off to me 
).
I’ve lived through low-latency optimization and high-frequency trading with BIG-IP, and I’ve spent time automating deployments with Ansible. I pride myself on delivering stress-tested, resilient designs for trading system
DevCentral: What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on these days?
Jeff: Right now I’m knee-deep in helping customers modernize for the AI era — securing and accelerating AI workloads. I’m also spending time getting hands-on with the latest AI tools so I can better understand how to protect these environments. My goal is to become proficient in AI inference security and help customers deploy proper guardrails and red-teaming practices to keep their AI applications safe.
DevCentral: How were you introduced to DevCentral and what keeps you engaged with our community?
Jeff: During my time as a customer, I discovered DevCentral years ago during a brutal migration project when I was googling all night for “Regex-based FIX parsing iRule”. The threads I found saved my project. What really hooked me was how many engineers jumped in with advice and alternative approaches that helped me get me moving again. Ever since then I’ve followed a “pay it forward” mentality — I try to help others who might be stuck the same way I was.
DevCentral: What does community mean to you?
Jeff: To me, community is that one place you can turn to when you hit a wall. It’s where collective knowledge gets shared freely, where you can get honest advice from people who’ve actually been in the same situation, and where you’re never truly stuck alone
DevCentral: What challenge have you encountered and how did community help you work through those challenges? (Does not have to be the DevCentral Community)
Jeff: Early in my F5 days I was really struggling with iRules. Not having a programming background made it even more stressful as developers kept asking for more intelligent traffic routing. I turned to DevCentral as my learning platform. There were tons of “Getting Started” series and a bunch of talented community members who posted useful iRule snippets when answering other questions. Reading those posts and testing the code samples helped me work through the developer requests and build confidence.
DevCentral: When visiting DevCentral, what are you looking for in post that make you want to engage?
**Jeff:**I’m drawn to posts that explain the thought process and the detailed steps someone took to solve a problem. Those are the ones where I usually jump in with a different perspective or alternative angle. I especially love posts that make me think, “I never considered that approach.”
DevCentral: What is a piece of advice you have received in your life that has stuck with you and how have you carried it with you?
**Jeff:**During a merger and acquisition trading design meeting, both architecture teams were flexing their muscles and came up with an overly complex design. My boss turned to me and said, “Jump in there and use the KISS principle — Keep It Simple, Stupid.” I’ve applied that principle everywhere I can ever since.
DevCentral: If you weren’t in your current profession what would be your dream job?
**Jeff:**My dream job would be playing goaltender for an NHL team — preferably the New York Rangers. Unfortunately, with the pedigree of Igor Shesterkin, Henrik Lundqvist, and Mike Richter, I don’t think I’d have much of a shot.
DevCentral: If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?
Jeff: If we’re talking technology, I’d love to instantly master programming. The speed at which our industry moves means a strong programming foundation is now the base for almost every cutting-edge technology. Being able to build and automate without limits would be a huge advantage
DevCentral: What’s a song that makes you feel unstoppable?
**Jeff:**There are a few, but if I had to pick one it would be Foo Fighters – “Best of You.” That song has this raw energy that just makes you feel like you can take on anything!
DevCentral: Lastly, what inspires you?
Jeff: Watching customers successfully deploy and use the designs and solutions I’ve helped build — and seeing the real value it brings to their business. That’s what keeps me going every day.
