Application hosted behind F5 showing 504 Gateway Timeout and 429 Too many Request

Application hosted behind F5 showing 504 Gateway Timeout an when Application team was trying to load test.

Users were trying to hit 150 users within an hour, in 10 minute intervals as part of load test for the Application hosted behind F5. This is a web application for your information.

What could be the problem in this case ?

  • Unless specifically configured to do so via an irule or similar, the BigIP itself will not generate a 504 Gateway Timeout error (or a 429 Too Many Request).

So it is most likely that this is an error from one (or all) of the pool members behind the virtual server. This is probably an application issue.

Yes there is no iRule and from the Virtual Server Config I see there is no connection and rate limit.

What is your Login behind that 504 and 429 will not be generated by F5 ?

The LTM isn't a webserver, it's a load balancer. If it cannot get a request to a pool member, the client side connection is reset. If there are too many connections, they get reset or dropped.

Apart from using an irule to deliberately generate those responses, they just are not responses that the LTM will generate.
