Manual Resume Function on Big-IP

Unlike 3DNS, the Big-IP doesn't have a 'manual resume' function on a VIP. Has anyone figured out how to incorporate that same functionality on the Big-IP? Someone suggested using an EAV monitor but I would have to tie that up to each node running on a service and obvious performance issues come to mind. We potentially wanted to use it for ~ 800 such nodes (same ip but running on a different service port).
